In a recent interview with Rubik Audiovisual, Lucas Figueroa, founder of Mr. Monkey, unveiled his latest project, El Streamer—a groundbreaking venture hailed as Spain’s first «hyperfiction» film. This innovative cinematic experience empowers audiences to influence the storyline in real-time, marking a significant departure from traditional film narratives.
El Streamer follows the journey of a streamer, portrayed by Javi Pereira, who becomes entangled in a complex situation, with viewers guiding his decisions through interactive choices. Figueroa describes the film as «nine movies in one,» emphasizing the importance of preserving its surprises to enhance audience engagement.
What sets El Streamer apart is its interactive format, allowing collective decision-making in theaters via a patented system developed by Mr. Monkey. This system utilizes handheld devices with three buttons, enabling viewers to make choices seamlessly without pausing the film. For larger venues, such as outdoor cinemas, a mobile-based voting system is employed.
Figueroa envisions El Streamer as a multidimensional project, adaptable to various platforms. In theaters, it offers a communal, choice-driven experience; on streaming services, it provides individualized interactivity; and on television, it can be presented as a linear narrative, determined by aggregated audience choices or promotional feedback.
By pioneering this interactive storytelling approach, Figueroa aims to attract younger audiences seeking novel cinematic experiences, revitalizing theater attendance and redefining audience engagement in film.
